Basic colour theory

We see the world in colours. So now in design, the designers have tapped into this element to strategically use colours to influence the public mind. In this basic colour theory we start from colour wheel. Colour is placed in the colour wheel. How different sets of colours are grouped to get a desired result.

Basic colour theory

Colour theory is a collection of rules and guidelines which
designers use to communicate with users through appealing colour schemes. To pick the best colours every time, designers use a colour wheel.

Colour Wheel
What is then a Colour Wheel

Sir Issac Newton is a mathematician, physicist. Newton worked with light and led him to discover that while light bends into seven different coloured lights . Each light has its own wavelength. This he found when he saw light pass through a prism. Further experiments led to the discovery that red, yellow and blue are primary colours.

Colour wheel is classified into three main categories.

The triangle in the center of the wheel in the picture is showing the primary colours.

That is red yellow and blue.

After that the next layer around is called the secondary colours.

So when you mix red and yellow it becomes orange. Blue and yellow mixed becomes green  Red and Blue mixed becomes violet.

The outer layer or the circle combines both primary colours and secondary colours and this is called the tertiary colours.

How colours are classified in the colour wheel

Colours again in the colour wheel are classified into :
Warm and cool colours.
Complementary colours opposite colours.
Analogous colours.
Triadic colours.
Rectangle tetradic colours.

Watch this interesting video tutorial that I made showing colours are classified into different categories in a colour wheel. Learning about this is important for a design student.

Conclusion:

There is meaning to each colour, apart form the above mentioned classification. Therefore designers combine the classification of colours with its appropriate meanings when designing. All design professionals have knowledge
about colours. Here i have mentioned few of them.
