Learn Design Principles

This is a skill that all design students have to develop. In the urban society that we live in there are lot of different ways through which message to the public is conveyed. More than verbal communication, visual communication is becoming more of an influence in the world.

Principles of design use design elements to enhance the viewer to understand designs in better way.

Design Principles are:

Balance. AlignmentHarmonyRhythmContrast, Visual Emphasis.

Balance : As a design principle, balance means distribution of elements of design (colour, text, shape etc.) in such a way that the desired message is put across to the people in the form of architecture, paintings, landscape designing, web designing.

There are three kinds of Balance

Symmetrical, Asymmetrical and Radial Balance.

 radial balance

In Radial Balance the elements are arranged around a central point. The emphasis  is on that part of design which catches the eye of the viewer. Here to create radial balance elements of design is used.

Symmetrical balance is used in design, when in a picture,  architectural buildings, fabric patterns , all the elements are similarly placed on either side. Here the mind and eye movements of a viewer need not do any mental gymnastics to determine what to see first . Message is prominently displayed.

Asymmetrical Design
Asymmetrical design
Asymmetrical balance design is done by the designers where certain elements are prominently emphasized. It could be shapes, bold colours, text. Other elements are in the background. So eyes move from one element to another, lingering on the message desired.

Alignment: In design when elements are scattered, the viewers interest is not their to appreciate your work. A designers aim is always make the audience get attracted towards their message, product. The aim is to influence the people to buy their products, put across a lifestyle idea in community. Elements are neatly arranged either on the left side, right side or center, for purpose of bring an order in the design. This is called alignment.

Harmony:  This principle of design states that in design when different elements or items are placed together it is seen and understood as they are grouped together. This is called harmony as well as proximity. When different elements of  varying colours and shapes  are placed near each other in an appealing way the viewer is influenced to see and perceive the design and act accordingly.

Rhythm : In design rhythm means repetition of elements. Elements can be lines shapes or colours. So when these elements are repeated a sense of movement in the mind arises. It creates visual tempo in artworks and provides the viewers eye a path to follow.

Visual Emphasis is a method to get the viewer’s attention to a specific design element. This can be in any form: a button or an image. The purpose is to create an impact that will stand out and bring the attention to the design. One can use different elements to highlight a specific part of the design, like lines, color, shape and many more.

Contrast : In this design elements like colours textures shapes or typefaces are placed in varying shades of lightness and darkness to create a visual effect of feeling when seeing an artwork. This effect will make the viewer to think, act, react, give opinion on any object. Contrast can be understood very well if one has good knowledge of colours. Colour is an element of design.
